During myringotomy procedures (also known as tympanotomy), fluids, pus and other buildup is removed by a surgeon who uses a myringotomy knife to create a small incision in the ear drum and/or tympanic membrane. After creating the incision, a tube (commonly referred to as a tympanostomy tube) is inserted into the middle ear. Instruments commonly used include knives, forceps, hooks, retractors and speculums, scissors and nippers, and suction tubes.
