Orthopedic rongeurs are used to gouge or scoop out bone. Some, like the Adson pattern, are pliers-shaped with hollow jaws to aid in the removal of bone. The Boehler and other patterns feature concave jaws that form a cup to retain tissue and bone when the jaws are closed. Laparoscopic style rongeurs, like the Caspar IVD rongeur, with long shafts are also common.
